The Den Site

The camera overlooks an active red fox den at the edge of a field in rural Southwestern Pennsylvania. The burrow entrance sits among fallen branches, mossy rock and forest leaf litter, a sheltered spot the foxes have returned to across seasons.

A Family on Camera

Denning red foxes are notoriously secretive, so a stream like this is exceptionally rare. Viewers can watch the vixen and her kits as the young grow bolder and begin to explore just beyond the safety of the den mouth.

Watching Responsibly

The setup was built to observe from a respectful distance, capturing natural parenting and hunting behavior without disturbing the animals. It is a small window into the hidden life of one of North America's most adaptable mammals.

About the Habitat

Set within the temperate woodlands of the Allegheny foothills, the surrounding forest supports the rodents, rabbits and birds that omnivorous red foxes depend on, making it an ideal home for raising a litter.
