The Beach

Praia Formosa is the largest beach on Madeira's south coast, a long stretch of dark volcanic pebbles and sand divided into several coves by natural rock outcrops. Its sheltered waters and protective breakwaters make it a favourite for swimmers and sunbathers along the island's capital.

Doca do Cavacas Pools

Just west of the beach, the camera takes in the Doca do Cavacas natural pool complex, where the Atlantic surges into basalt-rimmed rock pools carved by the sea. A short tunnel links the beach to these pools, a classic Madeiran lido experience.

Funchal Seafront

The view forms part of Funchal's vibrant oceanfront promenade, which threads west toward Ponta Gorda and the Lido bathing complexes. Strollers, cyclists and bathers share this lively coastal walkway beneath the city's amphitheatre of hills.

Madeira's South Coast

Set on the subtropical island of Madeira, this stretch of the Portuguese Atlantic enjoys a mild maritime climate year round. The horizon opens onto deep ocean, with passing boats and the ever-changing play of light over the water.
