Perched amid the Cordillera Cantábrica, Posada de Valdeón is the principal settlement of the secluded Valdeón valley, its cluster of terracotta-tiled stone houses surrounded by towering limestone walls. The village serves as the historic capital of one of the most dramatic glacial valleys in northern Spain.

Hemmed in by the Central and Western Massifs of the national park, the valley funnels north toward the legendary Cares Gorge, one of Europe's most spectacular hiking routes.
