Port de Merquel Tidal Harbor
OnlineThe Port de Merquel is a sheltered tidal inlet where dozens of sailboats and fishing craft lie at their moorings across broad mudflats and winding channels. A weathered stone slipway and a grassy breakwater frame this quiet Breton harbor, while the salt marshes of Mesquer stretch toward the horizon. It is a tranquil, working corner of the Loire-Atlantique coast.

A Classic Breton Tidal Harbor
The Port de Merquel lies along a tidal étier on the Mesquer peninsula, where a mosaic of moorings, mudflats and salt-marsh channels shelters a fleet of pleasure boats and traditional craft. As the tide ebbs and floods, the harbor shifts between a navigable basin and a vast expanse of glistening flats.
Boats, Slipway and Breakwater
A weathered stone slipway descends from the grassy embankment, giving local sailors access to their sailboats, dinghies and fishing boats. The curving breakwater and a lone flagpole mark the foreground, while rows of masts dot the channel beyond.
Mesquer and the Salt Marshes
The harbor belongs to the commune of Mesquer, a small resort and oyster-farming town on the Guérande peninsula. Its surrounding marais salants (salt marshes) and reed-fringed étiers form one of the most distinctive coastal landscapes of southern Brittany.
A Window on Coastal Loire-Atlantique
From this vantage point, viewers follow the rhythms of a working Atlantic tidal port — boats swinging on their moorings, walkers crossing the slipway, and birds feeding across the flats. It is a peaceful, ever-changing portrait of the Loire-Atlantique coastline.
