An Icon of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt
Standing at 5,393 metres, Popocatépetl is Mexico's second-highest peak and a sacred presence in the cultures of the central highlands. From this vantage near Amecameca, the volcano dominates the horizon, its symmetrical cone a constant reminder of the geological forces shaping the region.
A Window on Volcanic Activity
The camera offers a rare, continuous look at an erupting volcano. Wisps and surges of steam, gas and ash rise from the crater, monitored closely by Mexican authorities. Each frame captures the restless breath of one of the planet's most closely watched mountains.
The Town of Amecameca
At the volcano's western foot lies Amecameca, a historic town in the State of Mexico long tied to the pilgrimage route up Popocatépetl. Its position gives this feed a clear, face-on perspective of the great cone and the valley that separates it from neighbouring Iztaccíhuatl.
