A Refuge on the Madonie High Plateau

Rifugio Marini stands on the broad Piano Battaglia plateau, a natural saddle carved into the heart of the Madonie Mountains. For generations the historic refuge has offered shelter and hospitality to hikers, climbers, and mountain travelers crossing this remote corner of inland Sicily.

Sicilian Pine Woodland

The camera looks out over a dense stand of native Sicilian pines, their trunks rising toward an open pianoro where footpaths radiate outward across the plateau. Rocky outcrops and rolling ridgelines frame the woodland on every side.

Inside the Madonie Regional Park

The refuge lies within the Parco delle Madonie, a protected reserve renowned for its karst formations, ancient forests, and rich biodiversity. Piano Battaglia is one of the park's principal access points, drawing visitors year-round to explore its trails and peaks.

A Four-Season Mountain Base

Perched above the frazione of Petralia Sottana, the plateau doubles as one of Sicily's few winter sports areas and a summer base for trekking and nature study, making Rifugio Marini a constant presence on the mountain throughout the year.
