A Village Beneath the Cliffs

Perched on the southwest coast of Madeira, Paul do Mar is a traditional fishing village pressed between the towering volcanic escarpment and the Atlantic. This camera looks down from O Precipicio, capturing the compact grid of whitewashed houses, terraced banana plantations, and the long coastal promenade that hugs the shoreline.

The ER 223 Mountain Road

One of the village's most striking features is the serpentine ER 223 road, carved into the near-vertical cliff face in a sequence of hairpin bends. It links Paul do Mar to the parish of Fajã da Ovelha above, and is a celebrated feat of Madeiran engineering.

Beach, Harbour and Surf

Below, the pebbled beach of Ribeira das Galinhas and the small fishing harbour of Porto de Abrigo anchor village life. Paul do Mar is a renowned surfing hotspot, drawing wave riders to its powerful Atlantic swells and crystalline waters.

Traditions of the Atlantic

Each July the harbour hosts the lively Festa da Lapa (Limpet Festival), with concerts, traditional food and freshly grilled limpets. The view captures the enduring rhythm of a remote Atlantic community living between mountain and sea.
