A Close-Range Interior View

This infrared camera looks directly into the chamber of Owl Box 7, one of nine purpose-built roosting boxes spread across a ten-acre research property. The fixed close-range angle reveals every detail of the wood-shaving floor and rough-cut interior walls that give the box its cavity-like feel.

Part of a Screech Owl Research Project

Owl Box 7 is one node in a larger PixCams network monitoring eastern screech owls across a rural stretch of southwestern Pennsylvania. A separate pan-tilt-zoom camera elsewhere on the property tracks the owls' movements outside the boxes, while this fixed interior view stays trained on a single chamber.

Built for Roosting and, Later, Nesting

Boxes like this one serve cavity-nesting owls as safe, predator-resistant shelter for roosting through the colder months, and as a prospective nest site once breeding season arrives. The stationary vantage makes it possible to watch the box's use shift, from quiet roosting to active nest-building, over the course of a year.
