This infrared-equipped camera looks straight into the interior of Owl Box 3, a custom nest box mounted within a sprawling rural property. Dried leaves and fine twigs line the floor, mimicking the natural tree hollows these birds would otherwise seek out on their own.

One Node in a Nine-Box Network

Owl Box 3 is one of nine monitored roosting boxes spread across a ten-acre PixCams research property in southwestern Pennsylvania, each fitted with its own dedicated camera. Together the boxes form an ongoing conservation research project tracking resident cavity-nesting owls across the changing seasons.

A Private Look at Screech Owl Life

Eastern screech owls favor snug, enclosed cavities like this one for shelter, incubation, and raising young away from predators. The fixed close-range angle captures every detail of nest-building, feather care, and fledging as it unfolds, all without disturbing the resident birds.
