The osprey nest at Loch Garten is one of the most storied wildlife sites in Britain. After ospreys were driven to extinction in the UK in the early 20th century, a pair of Scandinavian birds settled by the loch in 1954, sparking a remarkable recolonisation that this reserve has watched over ever since.

The Abernethy Forest Setting

The nest sits within the Abernethy Forest, one of the largest remnants of the ancient Caledonian pinewood, a mosaic of gnarled pines, heather moorland and peat bog that shelters red squirrels, crossbills and other Highland species.
