A Rare Cavity-Nesting Duck
Unlike most ducks, the Goldeneye raises its young in tree cavities. This purpose-built nest box at RSPB Loch Garten recreates that hidden habitat, letting viewers follow a female through the whole breeding cycle from a vantage no wild observer could reach.
Eggs and Down Inside the Box
The interior camera reveals a clutch of around six to twelve eggs cradled in soft down. The female waits until the clutch is complete before incubating, so that all the ducklings hatch together and leave the box as one bold group.
Wild Setting at Loch Garten
The paired exterior shot places the box in the Caledonian pinewood and open bog of the reserve, close to Loch Mallachie. This corner of the Cairngorms is a stronghold for scarce breeding birds and a magnet for naturalists.
Conservation in Action
Managed by the RSPB, the reserve pairs habitat protection with public engagement. Watching a nesting Goldeneye up close turns a fleeting wildlife encounter into an ongoing, shareable story of northern breeding ducks.
