Osprey Nest at The Wetlands Institute

A raptor's-eye view of the marsh

The camera sits at the heart of a purpose-built osprey nesting platform, looking out over a vast expanse of coastal salt marsh. Tidal creeks, grassy hummocks and open mudflats fan out beneath the nest, a classic back-bay habitat of the southern New Jersey shore.

Life on the nest platform

Ospreys return to the same structure to rebuild a sprawling raft of sticks, reeds and grasses, lined with softer material at the cup. The viewer watches the fish-hunting raptor preen, rearrange nesting material and stand sentinel over its territory above the water.

The Wetlands Institute and coastal conservation

Run by The Wetlands Institute, the platform is part of a broader effort to help ospreys nest safely above the tide. The surrounding protected wetlands are a haven for shorebirds, herons and migrating species along the Atlantic Flyway.

What you can spot

Beyond the nesting raptor, watch for egrets, herons and gulls working the channels, the slow rhythm of the tides reshaping the mudflats, and the wide-open skies that define this stretch of Cape May County coastline.
