Þorbjörn Lava Plain Panorama
OnlineA sweeping panorama from the southern flank of Þorbjörn, the 243-metre volcanic mountain that rises beside the fishing town of Grindavík. The camera looks out across a vast field of fresh lava and moss-cloaked terrain toward the Sundhnúksgígar crater row and the open North Atlantic. This is one of several afarTV feeds trained on the restless Reykjanes volcanic system.

A Front-Row Seat to the Reykjanes Eruptions
Perched on the southern tip of Þorbjörn, this camera surveys the geologically young landscape of Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula. The broad foreground of cracked lava and green moss gives way to the Sundhnúksgígar fissure system, the source of the recent eruptive activity that has reshaped this corner of the island.
The Town of Grindavík Below
Directly beneath Þorbjörn lies Grindavík, a storied fishing community on the south coast. The mountain has long served as a natural watchtower over the town and the surrounding geothermal fields, including the famed Svartsengi power station and Blue Lagoon nearby.
A Living Volcanic Frontier
The Reykjanes system had lain dormant for some 800 years before reawakening, and the terrain in view is among the most closely watched ground in Iceland. Distant volcanic cones and the line where lava meets the sea make this an extraordinary window onto a planet still being built.
