The South View from Sýlingarfell
This elevated camera faces south from the rounded hill of Sýlingarfell, overlooking the dark expanse of the Sundhnúksgígar eruptive system north of Grindavík. The sweeping foreground of congealed basalt is some of the most recently formed ground on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
The Sundhnúksgígar Lava Plain
Successive fissure eruptions have layered fresh lava across this plain, leaving a jagged black surface broken by low cones and craters. Rounded hills of subglacial origin punctuate the open terrain, marking older volcanic episodes that predate the current rifting cycle.
A Living Volcanic Region
The Reykjanes Peninsula straddles the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian plates pull apart. This rifting drives the area's frequent eruptions and its otherworldly fields of bare rock and moss-flecked basalt.
Iceland's Frontier of Fire
From this vantage near Grindavík, the southward scene captures the meeting of ancient hills and newly created ground, a permanent record of the volcanic forces reshaping southwest Iceland.
