A Tribute to Atatürk

The Onur Anıtı commemorates the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who landed at Samsun in 1919 to begin the national independence movement. The equestrian bronze portrays him in military uniform astride a rearing horse, an enduring symbol of the city's place in modern Turkish history.

The Setting

The monument rises from a pointed-arch stone plinth at the centre of a formal circular garden, framed by trimmed shrubs, paved walkways and rows of Turkish national flags. A stately historic building stands among the surrounding trees, anchoring the square within central İlkadım.

Samsun is the largest city on Turkey's Black Sea coast and a major regional hub. Its central squares carry deep commemorative meaning as the gateway of the War of Independence, drawing residents and visitors alike throughout the year.
