A Rare Mainland Colony
Pukekura/Taiaroa Head guards the world's only mainland breeding colony of the Northern Royal Albatross (Toroa), a species that otherwise nests only on remote subantarctic islands. Run by New Zealand's Department of Conservation, the site protects these endangered giants of the Southern Ocean.
A Wandering Ocean Giant
With a wingspan reaching three metres, the Northern Royal Albatross is one of the largest flying birds on Earth. Adults spend years gliding across the open ocean, returning to this same headland to raise a single chick over a long breeding cycle.
The Pukekura/Taiaroa Head Reserve
This dramatic basalt promontory at the tip of the Otago Peninsula is a celebrated wildlife sanctuary, home to seals, penguins and a colony of nesting seabirds. The cam offers an intimate window onto an ecosystem few will ever visit in person.
