A second nest on the hospital grounds

Goshawks have bred on the territory of Riga's Children's Clinical University Hospital since 2015. Two well-kept nests sit close together among the old pines, and the resident pair alternates between them year to year. This camera frames the second of the two, giving a steady, up-close view of the platform and the surrounding canopy.

The Northern goshawk

The Accipiter gentilis is a powerful woodland hawk with broad wings and a long tail built for agile flight between the trees. Secretive and rarely seen at close range, it is a threatened species in Latvia, making this feed a rare chance to observe its nesting behaviour in detail.

A boreal pine setting

The nest rests on a thick, weathered branch, framed by the foliage and bark of mature pines typical of the region's boreal woodland. The leafy screen around the platform shifts with the breeze, lending the scene a quiet, sheltered feel.
