A Rare Forest Nest
This camera watches a half-barrel nest box mounted against the trunk of a mature Scots pine in the forests around Riga. The Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) is one of the world's largest owls, and Latvia holds only a handful of known breeding territories, making this a privileged window onto a secretive species.
The Surrounding Woodland
Beyond the nest, the lens takes in a sparse stand of old pines rising from a floor of moss and forest litter. This open boreal habitat is the classic biotope of the eagle-owl, where the birds hunt and shelter across the wider Rฤซgas meลพi managed forest.
Conservation in Action
The feed is operated by the Latvian Fund for Nature in partnership with Rฤซgas meลพi, part of a long-running effort to monitor and protect the species. Artificial nests like this one give the owls a secure breeding site where natural ledges and abandoned raptor nests are scarce.
What You Might See
Viewers may glimpse the incubating adult, the delivery of prey, or downy owlets growing within the box. The pair's distinctive orange eyes and feathered ear tufts mark them apart from every other owl in the region.
