Nordic Optical Telescope Dome

A Nordic Window on the Cosmos

The Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) is a 2.56-meter optical and near-infrared telescope built and operated by a consortium of Nordic countries, today led by Aarhus University in Denmark and the University of Turku in Finland. Its silver, hemispherical dome is one of the most recognizable structures at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory.

Perched Above the Clouds

Standing at 2,382 meters above sea level on the northern rim of La Palma's volcanic caldera, the site benefits from exceptionally stable, dark skies and a temperature inversion that keeps a blanket of clouds well below the summit, leaving the telescope's surroundings consistently clear for astronomical work.

A World-Class Observatory Network

The NOT shares its mountaintop with over a dozen other international telescopes, together forming one of the Northern Hemisphere's premier astronomical sites. The dome's distinctive shutter and rotating housing allow the instrument to track celestial targets with remarkable precision across the observatory's clear skies.

Science Beyond La Palma

Data gathered here supports research ranging from exoplanet discovery to deep-sky spectroscopy, cementing Roque de los Muchachos' reputation as one of the finest astronomical observing sites on the planet. The rugged, sparsely vegetated terrain surrounding the dome underscores just how remote and pristine this corner of the Canary Islands remains.
