A Modern Fishing Harbor
Nanfang'ao's Third Fishing Port grew out of a small commercial dock built in the 1960s to ease congestion at the older ports nearby. After a major expansion completed in 1983, the harbor was handed over to Yilan County and became the newest of Nanfang'ao's three historic fishing ports, purpose-built for large-hulled vessels.
Home to the Purse-Seine Fleet
Wide quays and open berths make this port the preferred base for purse-seine and ocean-going trawlers, whose catch is landed by the boxload rather than by hand. Heavy dockside machinery moves large volumes of mackerel from deck to warehouse, feeding the canneries that have long defined Su'ao's economy.
A Working Waterfront in Su'ao
Beyond the working harbor, the port's broad waterfront plaza and adjoining temple grounds give visitors an open view over the moored fleet and the hills that shelter Nanfang'ao's natural bay. The port remains an active hub of Taiwan's eastern deep-sea fishing industry, connecting local livelihoods to the wider Pacific fishing grounds.
