A Great Salmon River of Alaska
The Naknek River drains Naknek Lake within Katmai National Park and Preserve, flowing westward toward Bristol Bay. Its waters host one of the planet's largest runs of sockeye salmon, drawing anglers, wildlife and the region's famous brown bears to its banks.
Wildlife of the Katmai Wilderness
Beyond the salmon, the river corridor near King Salmon is a haven for beluga whales that swim upstream, along with bald eagles, waterfowl and moose. The surrounding boreal forest and tundra form a pristine ecosystem largely untouched by development.
