A Famous Plum Garden
The Mt. Tsukuba Plum Grove (็ญๆณขๅฑฑๆข ๆ) spreads across roughly 4.5 hectares of terraced hillside at around 250 metres elevation, planted with some 1,000 white, pink and red plum trees. Pavilions, stone lanterns and footbridges thread between the groves, making it one of Ibaraki's best-loved garden destinations.
One of Japan's Hundred Mountains
Rising behind the grove, the twin peaks of Mt. Tsukuba โ Nyotai-san and Nantai-san โ reach 877 metres and are counted among the Hundred Famous Mountains of Japan. The mountain has been revered for centuries and is crowned by the historic Tsukuba-san Shrine.
What the Camera Shows
The view takes in the forested southern flank of the mountain, a winding approach road and the rooftops of the grove's pavilions in the foreground. Far below, the Kantล plain unfolds toward the distant Tokyo skyline.
Planning a Visit
The grove sits on the Tsukuba-san approach in the city of Tsukuba, easily reached from the Tsukuba Express railway and a shuttle bus. A cable car and ropeway carry visitors to the twin summits for panoramic walks among the cedar forest.
