The Greatest Mountain
Rising to 5,269 feet, Mount Katahdin is the centerpiece of Baxter State Park and the highest point in Maine. Its steep granite massif, weathered to the surface from an ancient intrusion, dominates the horizon above the pristine waters of Millinocket Lake.
Northern Terminus of the Appalachian Trail
Katahdin marks the legendary end of the Appalachian Trail, the goal of thru-hikers who travel more than two thousand miles north. The mountain sits beside the Hundred-Mile Wilderness, one of the most remote stretches of forest in the eastern United States.
Maine's North Woods
The camera looks out from the Twin Pines shoreline at the New England Outdoor Center near Millinocket, framing a quintessential Maine scene of forested shores, open water, and a commanding alpine backdrop typical of northern New England.
