Matterhorn over Zermatt Village
OnlineA sweeping alpine panorama looks down over the rooftops of Zermatt as the valley climbs toward the unmistakable pyramid of the Matterhorn. Glacier-fed slopes, pine-clad ridges and a tight cluster of Swiss chalets fill the foreground, while the famous 4,478-metre summit stands sentinel at the head of the gorge in a view that is quintessentially Valaisan.

The View Over the Valley
This camera frames the entire Mattertal as it narrows toward the village of Zermatt, a car-free resort tucked deep in the Pennine Alps. Densely packed chalets and hotels spread across the valley floor, threaded by the winding main street and the rails of the Gornergrat railway that climb out of town.
The Matterhorn
Dominating the horizon is the Matterhorn (Monte Cervino), whose razor-sharp four-sided summit rises to 4,478 metres. One of the most photographed peaks on Earth, it marks the watershed between Switzerland and Italy and gives the scene its unmistakable silhouette.
An Alpine Stage
Surrounding ridges carry hanging glaciers and high pastures, while paragliders occasionally drift across the frame. The interplay of cloud, rock and steep forest makes this one of the most dramatic mountain backdrops in the Valais.
