A Guardian of the Capital's Southern Gate
Jonangu Shrine has stood at the southern edge of Kyoto since the founding of the Heian-kyo capital in 794, when it was established to ward off misfortune from the ominous direction believed to threaten the new city. Its name, meaning "south of the capital", reflects that original protective role, and generations of travelers and drivers alike have stopped at its weathered torii gate to seek safe passage.
Rakusuien: A Garden Through the Seasons
Behind the shrine's halls lies Rakusuien, a celebrated strolling garden that recreates the springs and streams once prized by Heian-era nobility. Plum blossoms, camellias, azaleas, wisteria and maples follow one another through the garden's cycle, drawing visitors who come as much for the landscaping as for the shrine's spiritual history.
Kyokusui: Poetry on a Winding Stream
Twice a year the shrine revives the elegant Heian-period custom of Kyokusui no Utage, in which costumed poets compose verses as sake cups drift along a meandering stream. The tradition, rooted in aristocratic garden parties of over a millennium ago, remains one of Kyoto's most distinctive living cultural rituals.
Watching Fushimi's Sacred Approach
This live camera looks along the approach road toward the shrine's main torii gate, framed by dense camphor and pine cover typical of Fushimi Ward's older shrine precincts. It offers a continuous window onto one of Kyoto's quieter yet historically significant sanctuaries, away from the busier temple circuits of the city center.
