Takakura Overpass Trainspotting

A railfan's window on the JR Kyoto Line

Perched above the tracks at the Takakura overpass, this camera captures the constant flow of trains along the Tōkaidō Main Line as it runs through the eastern approaches of Kyoto Station. Commuter services bound for Osaka, Sannomiya and Himeji share the corridor with the Sagano Line and long-distance limited expresses.

A major junction of western Japan

Kyoto Station is one of the busiest hubs on the West Japan Railway network, where local, regional and freight traffic converge on a dense fan of parallel rails. From this vantage the signal gantries, overhead catenary and shunting movements of the yard are all in clear view.

What to watch for

Look out for the Thunderbird limited express heading for Fukui, Kanazawa and Toyama, sleek suburban EMUs, and the occasional freight consist on the Tōkaidō Freight Line. Each service threads the same web of points and crossings that make this corridor so absorbing.
