A Falcon Pair on a Hotel Ledge

Since 2004, a pair of peregrine falcons has nested on a high balcony of the Kanku Izumiotsu Washington Hotel in Izumiotsu, making it one of Japan's longest-running urban raptor nest sites. The current residents, known locally as Kirara IV and Sara, occupy a gravel-lined scrape built up over two decades of breeding seasons.

Built for Life on the Wing

Peregrine falcons are the fastest animals on Earth, capable of diving stoops that exceed 300 km/h when hunting pigeons and other birds over open ground. The hotel's high balcony railing gives this pair an ideal vantage point and launch perch, mimicking the cliff ledges their species favors in the wild.

Overlooking Osaka Bay and Kansai Airport

The nest sits high above Izumiotsu, within sight of the reclaimed islands of Kansai International Airport and the busy waterway of Osaka Bay. This mix of coastal industry, shipping lanes, and open water supports a steady population of prey birds that keeps the resident falcons close to home year-round.

A Community Conservation Watch

Local volunteers and bird enthusiasts have monitored this rooftop nest continuously since its discovery, sharing the hatching, fledging, and territorial displays of successive falcon generations. The camera offers a rare, close-up window into the private life of an urban apex predator most city residents never see.
