Hanko's Art Nouveau villas and seaside promenade reflect its past as a fashionable 19th-century spa resort, while its sheltered, ice-free harbour made it strategically vital for Finnish trade. The surrounding archipelago of granite skerries shelters the marina from the open Baltic swell.
