The Grande Plage shoreline

La Grande Plage is the great arc of sand at the heart of Les Sables-d'Olonne, a gently shelving beach that draws families and bathers to the Vendée coast. Its sheltered bay and broad low-tide flats make it one of the safest swimming beaches on France's Atlantic shore.

Le Remblai and the resort front

Behind the sand runs Le Remblai, the celebrated seafront promenade lined with belle-époque villas, cafes and the resort casino. This esplanade has been the social spine of the town since the nineteenth century and frames the camera's view of the beach.

A storied Atlantic sailing town

Les Sables-d'Olonne is renowned worldwide as the start and finish port of the Vendée Globe, the solo round-the-world yacht race. The working harbour, fishing fleet and sailing heritage give the town a distinctly maritime character.
