Fulltofta White Stork Enclosure
OnlineA protected enclosure inside Fulltofta Nature Reserve shelters a resident colony of white storks, gathered around raised platform nests scattered across an open meadow. Reed beds and a shallow pond border the paddock, part of a long-running program to breed and reintroduce this once-vanished wading bird.

A Sanctuary for a Returning Species
The white stork disappeared as a breeding bird in Sweden during the 19th century as wetlands were drained and nesting sites vanished. The enclosure at Fulltofta keeps a founder colony in a spacious, netted paddock, giving the birds safe nesting platforms while conservationists work to re-establish free-flying populations across the surrounding countryside.
Inside the Enclosure
Storks gather on and around several raised stick nests built on low wooden platforms, set among tall reeds and cropped grass. A shallow pond and open water at the far edge of the paddock supply the birds with insects, frogs, and small fish, mirroring the wetland foraging grounds their wild ancestors once used.
Fulltofta Nature Reserve
The enclosure sits within a wider nature reserve of forest, meadow, and lake in central Skåne, one of southern Sweden's most visited protected landscapes. The reserve's mix of habitats supports the stork project alongside grazing cattle, birdlife, and a network of walking trails.
