East Beach Tidal Sands, Isle of Berneray

An Expansive Hebridean Beach

This camera overlooks East Beach, one of the great open sands of the Isle of Berneray. The broad, shelving flats reveal a constantly shifting mosaic of channels, sandbars and tidal pools as the sea advances and retreats across the Sound of Harris, a stretch of water famed for its luminous clarity.

Dunes, Machair and Hills

In the foreground, marram-grass dunes give way to the fertile coastal grassland known as machair, a habitat unique to the Atlantic fringe of Scotland and Ireland. Beyond the bay, the rounded hills of North Uist and Harris form the backdrop, their slopes shaped by the wind and weather of the open North Atlantic.

A Remote Island Setting

Berneray lies at the northern tip of the chain linked by causeway to North Uist, deep within the Outer Hebrides. The island is celebrated for its tranquillity and its almost untouched coastline, where seabirds, seals and wading birds are a frequent presence along the strand.

Watching the Tide and Light

Few places capture the raw, elemental character of the Hebrides like this wide bay. The view rewards patient watching as the tide reshapes the sands hour by hour, revealing and concealing the patterns that make this shore endlessly different.
