The Cavern's Natural Entrance

The camera is perched above the natural entrance to Carlsbad Caverns, framing the winding trail that spirals down into the sinkhole-like mouth of the cave. Carved into ancient limestone over millions of years, the entrance drops through sheer rock walls into one of the largest known cave systems in North America.

Home to a Legendary Bat Colony

This is the very spot where the park's colony of Brazilian free-tailed bats streams out of the cave in a swirling column, one of the most celebrated wildlife spectacles in the American Southwest. Hundreds of thousands of bats roost deep within the cavern, using the same entrance for their dramatic mass exodus.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park protects more than a hundred limestone caves sculpted by sulfuric-acid dissolution, including the cavern's famous Big Room. The National Park Service maintains the site to safeguard both the fragile cave formations and the bat colony that depends on them.

A Landmark of the Chihuahuan Desert

Rising above the caverns, the rugged limestone foothills of the Guadalupe Mountains stretch across the Chihuahuan Desert of southeastern New Mexico. The rocky terrain and sparse desert vegetation visible around the entrance reflect one of the most biologically diverse desert ecosystems on the continent.
