A Refuge for the Prairie's Giants

Grasslands National Park protects one of the continent's last remnants of undisturbed mixed-grass prairie, and its free-roaming plains bison herd is the star of the ecosystem. This watering hole is a natural gathering point where the massive animals come to drink and wallow, offering a rare close-up window into the daily rhythms of a species that once numbered in the tens of millions across North America.

Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan

Tucked against the Canada–US border in southern Saskatchewan, the park preserves a rugged, rolling landscape of coulees, buttes, and short grasses shaped by wind and seasonal drought. It is one of the few places on the continent where the original prairie ecosystem survives largely intact, supporting species that have vanished from most of their former range.

A Hub of Prairie Wildlife

Beyond the bison, the watering hole draws a steady cast of prairie residents. Coyotes patrol the fringes, the burrowing American badger hunts along the grass edge, and countless smaller creatures depend on this same source of water in an otherwise arid, wind-swept environment. Operated in partnership with Grasslands National Park, the feed is a live window into one of the Great Plains' most important wildlife refuges.
