The Eastern Terminus

Bishops Lydeard is the southern gateway of the West Somerset Railway, where every journey along the line begins and ends. The camera overlooks the traditional platforms, the running lines and the station buildings, giving a constant view of arrivals, departures and the comings and goings of a working railway.

A Living Heritage Railway

Stretching across some twenty miles of the Somerset countryside, the West Somerset Railway is England's longest standard-gauge heritage line. Run largely by dedicated volunteers, it preserves the nostalgic character of a rural branch line and marks fifty years of preservation.

Trains and Movements to Spot

Look out for locomotives running round their carriages, careful shunting in the yard and trains being prepared for the next departure. Both vintage steam and classic heritage diesel traction work the line, making each movement a treat for railway enthusiasts and trainspotters.

Set in a quiet village near Taunton, the station offers a relaxed countryside atmosphere complete with period details, a signal box and the iconic red telephone box. It is the perfect starting point for a scenic ride through the rolling hills and coastline of Somerset.
