A Premier South Dakota Recreation Lake

Angostura Reservoir stretches across the valley of the Cheyenne River in Fall River County, impounded by the earthen Angostura Dam. With roughly thirty-six miles of shoreline and famously warm, clear water, it is one of the most visited lakes in the southern part of the state.

Marina, Beaches & the Recreation Area

The foreground belongs to the Angostura Recreation Area, a state park whose sandy beaches, full-service marina and boat ramps draw anglers and boaters in large numbers. Walleye, bass and perch make the reservoir a renowned fishing destination, while the marina docks and slips line the calm near shore.

Foothills of the Southern Black Hills

Across the water rise the rolling, grass-and-pine foothills that mark the southern edge of the Black Hills. The buttes and ridges around Hot Springs give the scene its distinctive layered backdrop of open rangeland and ponderosa pine.

Gateway to the Southern Black Hills

Just south of Hot Springs, the reservoir sits at the doorstep of attractions such as Wind Cave National Park and the Mammoth Site. The camera offers a constant window onto a quintessential western South Dakota landscape of water, prairie and pine.
