A Legendary Bear Fishing Ground
Anan Creek hosts one of the largest gatherings of black bears in Southeast Alaska, drawn by one of the most abundant pink salmon runs in the region. From a viewing platform operated by the U.S. Forest Service, this camera looks over a churning stretch of the creek where bears fish shoulder to shoulder.
Life Along the Salmon Run
Bears begin arriving in early summer, with activity peaking as the salmon surge upstream. Some animals fish patiently in the shallows while others haul their catch onto the boulder-strewn bank or back into the trees to eat in solitude.
The Tongass Rainforest
The creek runs through the Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate rainforest in the United States. Towering conifers, hanging moss and ferns frame the water, creating a wild, primeval backdrop for the wildlife below.
Eagles, Ravens and the Feast
Bald eagles, ravens and crows share in the bounty, scavenging salmon scraps left behind by the bears. Together they turn this remote corner of the Alaskan wilderness into a living food web unfolding in real time.
