Turks and Caicos Islands
Islands on a Shallow Bank
The islands sit on the rim of the Caicos Bank, a vast underwater plateau only a few metres deep, which gives the sea around them its famous pale turquoise colour. The capital, Cockburn Town, is on Grand Turk, but most visitors arrive on Providenciales, the main tourist island.
Grace Bay and Leeward
One camera looks across a resort pool to Grace Bay, a long beach of fine white sand on the north shore of Providenciales, protected by an offshore reef and by Princess Alexandra National Park. The other watches the lagoon at Leeward, at the island's eastern tip, where boats cross the shallow channels toward the cays, among them Little Water Cay, home to a colony of rock iguanas.
Whales and Weather
From January to April, humpback whales pass through the deep Turks Island Passage on their way to their breeding grounds. The trade winds keep the islands warm and fairly dry all year; from June to November the cameras also show the clouds and swell of the hurricane season.
