Turkey

The Green Black Sea Coast

Along the northeast coast, the Pontic Mountains rise steeply from the sea and catch more rain than anywhere else in the country. Rize is the heartland of Turkish tea, grown on the slopes behind the town, and its camera looks over 15 July Square and its monument. Further west, Giresun, the town of hazelnuts, is watched from the castle on its headland, with the Black Sea on both sides, and another camera looks at the mosque of Okçu, a village in the green hills above the town.

A Stork That Comes Back

In the northwest, at Eskikaraağaç, a village of Karacabey on the shore of Lake Uluabat, a white stork named Yaren returns to the same nest every spring. For years it has followed a local fisherman's boat out onto the lake to be fed, a friendship that made the village known across the country.

Four Seas, Many Climates

Turkey has coasts on the Black, Marmara, Aegean and Mediterranean seas. The Black Sea cameras show mist rolling down green hills and sudden summer showers, a very different picture from the dry, sunny Aegean.
