Tanzania
Mountain, Crater and Coast
Kilimanjaro, at 5,895 metres the highest mountain in Africa, rises alone from the plains of the north. Nearby, the Ngorongoro Crater, a collapsed volcano, shelters a dense population of animals on its floor, and off the coast, Stone Town on Zanzibar keeps the carved doors and narrow lanes of an old trading port. About a third of the country is protected land.
The Serengeti
The camera is in Serengeti National Park, almost 15,000 square kilometres of grassland whose name comes from a Maasai word for endless plains. It looks over a waterhole that draws the animals of the surrounding plains.
The Great Migration
More than a million wildebeest move around the Serengeti each year in search of fresh grass. Calves are born on the southern plains between January and March, and during the dry season, from June to October, animals gather around any water that remains, the best time to watch the camera.
