The City of Cape Town is a metropolitan municipality in the Western Cape that encompasses the central city, the Cape Peninsula and a broad ring of suburbs and townships. Wrapped around the slopes of Table Mountain and bounded by the Atlantic, it forms one of South Africa's three legislative capitals and houses the national Parliament.

The district's dramatic geography pairs a flat-topped mountain massif with long beaches, rocky bays and the meeting of cold Atlantic and warmer False Bay waters, giving the area a distinctive Mediterranean-style climate.
