Mountains and Wine

The Greater Caucasus forms Georgia's northern border, with Shkhara, above 5,190 metres, as its highest summit. In the valleys below, Georgians have made wine for some 8,000 years, fermenting it in large clay jars called qvevri buried in the ground, a method recognised by UNESCO.

Rustavi and Its Poet

The camera is in Rustavi, about 25 kilometres southeast of Tbilisi on the Mtkvari river, in the region of Kvemo Kartli. Although the name is ancient, the modern city was built from the late 1940s around a large steelworks, with wide Soviet-era streets and squares. The view shows a roundabout on Zhiuli Shartava Square crowned by a statue of Shota Rustaveli, the 12th-century poet who wrote The Knight in the Panther's Skin, Georgia's national epic; his name means of Rustavi.

Seasons in the Lowlands

East Georgia has hot summers and fairly dry, cold winters. The camera follows the city's traffic and light from the long summer evenings to the early winter dusk.
