Faroe Islands
Islands in the North Atlantic
About 54,000 people live on the Faroe Islands, many of them in and around the capital, Tórshavn, on Streymoy. Grassy slopes rise straight from the sea to cliffs and ridges, and road tunnels, some of them under the sea, link most of the islands. The Gulf Stream keeps the harbours free of ice, but the weather changes by the hour.
Vágur on Suðuroy
Both cameras are in Vágur, at the head of a fjord on the east coast of Suðuroy, the southernmost large island, two hours by ferry from Tórshavn. One watches the harbour and the fjord as fishing boats come and go; the other looks down on the village, its houses scattered along the water below the green hillsides. A few kilometres south, the cliff of Beinisvørð drops about 470 metres into the ocean.
Long Light and Low Cloud
Fog, drizzle and sudden sunshine can follow one another within minutes, and the cameras show how quickly cloud pours over the ridges. In June the sky stays light until close to midnight, while winter days are short and often wild.
