Dominican Republic
Mountains and the First City
The Cordillera Central runs through the middle of the country and rises to Pico Duarte, at 3,098 metres the highest mountain in the Caribbean. On the south coast, the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, founded in the 1490s, holds the first cathedral, hospital and university built by Europeans in the Americas, and is listed by UNESCO.
Sosúa
The camera is in Sosúa, in Puerto Plata province, on the Atlantic-facing north coast. In 1940 the town took in Jewish refugees fleeing Europe, who founded a dairy and sausage business that still carries the town's name; a small museum tells their story. Today Sosúa is a busy resort town, and the camera shows the traffic, motorbikes and daily life passing a roadside checkpoint.
Sun, Rain and Hurricanes
The north coast is warm all year, with more rain in winter than the south. From June to November the hurricane season can bring heavy storms across the island.
