Forests and Wetlands

About two fifths of Belarus is covered by forest, and the south holds the Polesia wetlands, one of the largest marsh regions in Europe. On the Polish border, Białowieża Forest, one of the last remnants of the primeval lowland forest that once covered the continent, is home to the European bison and is listed by UNESCO.

Minsk and Trinity Suburb

The capital, Minsk, was almost entirely destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt with wide avenues and monumental squares. The camera looks over Trinity Suburb, a small quarter of pastel houses with steep roofs on the bank of the Svislach river, reconstructed in the 1980s in the style of the old town. Beside it, the Island of Tears holds a memorial to the soldiers who died in the war in Afghanistan.

Continental Seasons

Winters are cold and snowy, with the river often frozen, and summers are warm and green. The cameras follow the change from long, bright June evenings to short, grey days in December.
