A Thousand Years of Pilgrimage

Founded in the 7th century, Zenkoji Temple is one of the oldest and most important Buddhist temples in Japan. Unaffiliated with any single sect, it has welcomed pilgrims of all schools for over a millennium, drawing millions of visitors to its sacred grounds in Nagano.

The Nakamise Approach

This camera overlooks the Nakamise-dori, the historic stone-paved avenue leading to the temple. Framed by traditional wooden storefronts, teahouses and stone lanterns, it channels the flow of worshippers toward the monumental Sanmon gate.

The Sanmon Gate and Main Hall

Beyond the approach rises the two-storey Sanmon gate, and past it the vast Hondo main hall — a designated National Treasure and one of the largest wooden structures in eastern Japan, housing the temple's hidden principal image.
