The Island of Cats

Yushima is a remote islet of barely four kilometres' circumference set in the Ariake Sea off Kami-Amakusa. Renowned across Japan as Neko-shima, it shelters some 250 cats alongside about two hundred residents, an extraordinary ratio that has made the island a beloved pilgrimage for cat lovers.

A Community Feeding Station

The camera frames a purpose-built feeding and shelter point, where woven baskets, ceramic bowls and a weather-proof cat house give the colony a reliable gathering spot. Cats drift in and out of frame, grooming, dozing and waiting for the next meal in an unhurried, homely rhythm.

Human and Feline Coexistence

Far from strays, these cats are individually named, vaccinated and neutered by the islanders under a formal coexistence programme run with the local newspaper and the city. The initiative balances animal welfare with the daily life of a working fishing village.

Watching from Anywhere

The feed offers a calm, meditative window into island life, the recorded murmur of waves standing in for on-site audio to protect residents' privacy. It is a quiet ambient companion and a portrait of one of Japan's most charming small communities.
