A Rail Crossroads by Lake Michigan

The Hammond–Whiting Amtrak Depot sits at one of the busiest rail junctions in the Chicago gateway, the point where a dense web of freight and passenger lines fans out toward the city. This camera looks out over Norfolk Southern's Chicago Line at Milepost 507.07, giving a clear, continuous view of the crossing and the depot platform.

Three Railroads, One Frame

Beyond the Norfolk Southern main line, the view stretches to CSX's Barr Subdivision and the Canadian National Lakefront Subdivision, with CPKC trains also exercising trackage rights through the corridor. Few vantage points let a railfan watch four different carriers pass the same fixed point.

Amtrak at the Depot

The station itself is an active stop on Amtrak's Wolverine Service between Chicago and Michigan, and a regular waypoint for long-distance trains including the Floridian, Lake Shore Limited, Blue Water, and Pere Marquette.
