A Working Gateway on Oʻahu's Leeward Coast

The camera looks straight down Waianae Valley Road toward the blue chain-link gate of the convenience center, the municipal drop-off point where residents of the Waiʻanae district bring household rubbish and recyclables. Utility poles, a service lane and parked vehicles flank the entrance.

Behind the gate the road climbs into Waiʻanae Valley, hemmed by the steep, forested ridges of the Waiʻanae Range — the oldest and driest mountains on Oʻahu. The lush vegetation pressing in on the right edge gives the scene its distinctly tropical character.
