About This Webcam
Everything you need to know about this live stream
The Vismarkt, Groningen's Market Square
The Vismarkt (Fish Market) is one of the two great squares of Groningen's historic centre, a short walk from the Grote Markt. As its name recalls, it began as the town's fish market, and it still hosts a busy programme of markets throughout the year: fish, vegetables, fruit, antiques and second-hand books all find their place on its broad cobbled surface.
The Korenbeurs Grain Exchange
The camera faces the Korenbeurs, the monumental nineteenth-century corn exchange whose neoclassical portico of tall columns and triangular pediment, crowned by statues, closes the western side of the square. Built for the grain trade of the surrounding farmland, it remains one of the city's best-known buildings, flanked by gabled facades, cafés and restaurants.
Events and Everyday City Life
The Vismarkt is a stage for the city's liveliest gatherings: the travelling kermis funfair, the finish line of the popular 4 Mijl van Groningen running race and open-air performances and concerts. Between events the view shows the authentic rhythm of a Dutch city, with shoppers, students and a constant stream of bicycles.
A Long-Running City Webcam
The Vismarkt webcam has been streaming since 2008, making it one of the longest-running live views of the city. Its operator states that no recordings are stored during the broadcast.
