Pioneer Roots Beside the Elkhart River
John Violett claimed this riverside tract in 1833, and the cemetery he founded has held burials continuously since 1859. Generations of early Elkhart County settlers rest here, on ground first drawn from the wooded bank of the river.
Forest Reclaiming the Old Grounds
Decades of growth have folded a large share of the historic plots back into mature hardwood forest, giving the cemetery an unusually wild, secluded feel for a burial site inside city limits.
A Standing Nature Camera
This feed is one of a small network of stationary cameras the city's Environmental Resilience Department maintains to connect residents with Goshen's natural spaces. It offers a continuous view of the canopy, the forest floor, and the wildlife that passes through.
A Quiet Corner of Local History
Beyond the trees, the grounds remain an active piece of Goshen's civic fabric, with ongoing preservation work extending the cemetery's story into its third century of use.
